What to do immediately after an accident
Four things to do before you leave the scene. Your insurer will ask about all of them.
Make it safe
Stop, hazards on, and get everyone out of traffic. Call 999 if anyone is hurt or the road is blocked.
Swap details
Names, addresses, phone numbers, registrations and insurers of every driver involved. You must stop and give your details by law.
Record evidence
Photos of the road and all damage. Note the time, place and weather, and get any witnesses' names and numbers.
Don't admit fault
Stick to the facts. Fault is decided later by the insurers, based on the evidence.
Independent non-fault accident assistance
If another driver caused the accident, our independent team can help you get back on the road. We work alongside your insurer, not instead of it.
- Accident assistance. Someone to talk you through what happens next, from the first call onwards.
- Vehicle recovery. If your car can't be driven, we can arrange for it to be recovered.
- Replacement vehicle. Where the other driver was at fault, a replacement car while yours is off the road, subject to eligibility.
- Vehicle repairs. Repairs at an approved garage, or you can choose your own repairer.
- Claims guidance. Plain explanations of how a non-fault claim works and what you'll need.
Eligibility. These services are for drivers who were not at fault. We'll check your situation first and explain any conditions and any agreement involved before anything is arranged. Nothing is arranged without your agreement.
If you were injured. We deal with hire and repair. The firm we pass your claim to can recommend solicitors who handle personal injury claims.
Common questions
Who are Online Motor Claims?
An independent accident assistance service. We help drivers after a road accident and, where another driver was at fault, can arrange recovery, repairs and a replacement vehicle, subject to eligibility. Online Motor Claims is a trading style of Total Claims Solutions (UK) Ltd, a claims management company authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN 833867).
Are you an insurance company?
No. We do not sell insurance and are not part of any insurer. To make a claim on your own policy, contact your insurer directly. Our insurer guides show how.
What happens if another driver caused the accident?
The other driver's insurer should cover your losses. You can still tell your own insurer, and we can help arrange repairs and a replacement vehicle while the claim is made against the driver at fault, subject to eligibility.
What will I need?
Your policy details, your vehicle registration, the other driver's name, address, registration and insurer, photos of the scene and damage, and any witness details.
Do I still need to tell my own insurer?
Yes. Most policies require you to report any accident promptly, even if you don't plan to claim on your policy.
